For many younger people, university is an opportunity to spread their wings, move away from home and reach out for unknown potential. But one mother-daughter duo is discovering just how far you can go with your family by your side.
Undergraduate students Jessica Anthonette Grace and her daughter Anniesha Kimone Lecky have just finished their first term at the University, studying for their BSc (Hons) in Health and Social Care Top-Up together.
"I saw this as an opportunity to encourage and support my daughter," Jessica said of her reasons for choosing to go study with Anniesha. "I wanted to show her that she should have confidence in her abilities."
Of course, the prospect of having your mum watching over you when you start university might be a bit daunting for some. But Anniesha says it’s helped her thrive. "Studying together is really exciting," she says. "We get to share ideas and do group work together. It’s really the experience of a lifetime."
Both mother and daughter decided on the top-up Health and Social Care BSc because of their passion for helping others. "I truly want to help others," Jessica says. "I want to work in senior positions in the NHS. I think this degree will help me achieve that goal."
“I chose the same uni as my mum because I really wanted to share my journey with her.” - Anniesha Kimone Lecky, BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Top-Up.
93.4% of our graduates go on to work, study or training within six months of completing their course. With many of those working for the NHS, Jessica’s goal is well within her reach.
Like her mum, Anniesha is hoping to top-up her Higher National Diploma to a full honours BSc so she can work in the NHS. "I decided on this degree because of my experiences in my current job," says Annishea. "I work as a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant but I’d love to take that further. My eventual plan is to work with the NHS, just like my mum."
The BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care Top-Up is designed for people like Jessica and Anniesha who have experience working in the sector but want to open the doors to career progression. If you’re interested in finding out more, visit our course page.
