University of Sunderland in London student in a class

You’ve just joined the University of Sunderland in London, congratulations! We’re so excited to have you here as part of our unique, welcoming and close-knit community of students, academics and support staff.

While there is a lot for you to know, experience and do during your first few hours, days and weeks with us, we thought it might be helpful to highlight some of the most useful services for you to take advantage of as a new student.

The Gateway

An invaluable source of information and guidance for you from your first class to graduation, The Gateway desk is located on the fourth floor of the Marsh Wall building.

The dedicated team of friendly staff are there to offer advice on all aspects of University life and can point you in the right direction for everything from finances to welfare and accommodation.

They’re open between 9am to 5pm every Monday to Friday but if you need help outside of these hours you can always send them a message through our Compass system.

You can also email them at gateway-london@sunderland.ac.uk or call on 0207 531 7333 during working hours.

The Library

A major part of the university experience is getting to know the library. Ours is located on the first floor of the Marsh Wall Building.

Equipped with everything you need for your degree, from all the major academic textbooks and journals to digital resources for those hard-to-find articles, the team is there for you.

They’ll be able to answer your questions on study skills to make sure you have all the knowledge you need to do your best during your time with us.

Health and Wellbeing

We all want a helping hand sometimes, whether that’s accommodating a long-term medical condition or coping with the impact mental health can have on your studies.

That’s why our dedicated Health and Wellbeing team are on hand to offer confidential support on a wide range of topics including disability allowance, diet and nutrition and learning difficulties among many others.

You can meet them for a face-to-face chat either through appointment or drop-in at any time on the 4th floor of the Marsh Wall building, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Get in touch with the team on 0207 531 7343 or email them your questions at londonhealth@sunderland.ac.uk.

Careers and employability

While we know it’s a little early for you to start thinking about what you want to do when you graduate, it’s always worth knowing the Careers and Employability team.

They can help you with everything from gaining the skills employers are looking for, to working on our strengths and weaknesses and even how to start your job search.

You can find them on the 4th floor of the Marsh Wall building. Book an appointment early on to stay career-focused throughout your studies. Get in touch by email at careers-london@sunderland.ac.uk or phone on 020 7531 7333.

Personal Academic Tutors

Of course, when you start at University you’re probably feeling a little lost. It takes time to learn to navigate the world of higher education, which is where our Personal Academic Tutors (PATs) come in.

All highly qualified, coming from higher education backgrounds, our PATs work with your tutors to help you overcome the challenges you might face during your studies.

Personalised one-to-one meetings with them will help you go over any concerns you have and they’ll assist you in creating plans to tackle any issues on your path to success.

You’ll be given the name and contact details of your PAT in your first few days. Make sure to keep in regular touch with them throughout your studies.
