Bob Blackman MP hosting UoSiL students at the House of Commons

University of Sunderland in London students recently had the opportunity to visit the House of Commons as part of UK Parliament Week

Hosted by Bob Blackman MP, the students’ visit took place at Portcullis House and included speeches on community matters, cultural representation, and various other issues.

There were also presentations from Madhini Sivasubrahmanian from the UoSiL Department of Nursing and Business Management student De-Hua Hyang, the latter of whom discussed migration aspects from the perspective of an international student.

I raised the issue of nursing vacancies and the impact of healthcare delivery, the profession’s perilous current status and the impact of proposed industrial action,” said Sivasubrahmanian.

She added: “I also covered how we can manage these issues from a higher education point of view and a healthcare management point of view.”

It's quite a precious opportunity for students to go to parliament and directly talk to an MP. it was a very amazing experience for me - De-Hua Hyang, Business Management student

The visit was in conjunction with the Sanskruti Centre for Cultural Excellence – a charitable organisation founded by our own Associate Lecturer Ragasudha Vinjamuri. Speaking on the day, Vinjamuri said: “From debating on issues, creating petitions, Q&As and chats with MPs, our event went well.

“Important issues were discussed in the presence of an MP and more was learnt about how parliament functions.”
