Courses we offer

Our English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses are available for all students wishing to study a degree at either one of the University of Sunderland campuses. 

We currently host in-person London campus and online courses, so you have the flexibility to decide which course suits you.

Short courses and EAP

EAP in-person 2024

EAP (in-person): Pre-sessional English (Intermediate)

This ten-week course is for anyone with an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 5.0 who wants to improve their English. Our experienced and supportive teachers will help you bring your skills up to the level needed to study your chosen University course. You'll learn skills like note-taking, speaking in seminars, making presentations, writing essays and much more. By the end of the course, you'll achieve the University of Sunderland in London's equivalent of 1.0 IELTS bands.

EAP in-person 2024

EAP (in-person): Pre-sessional English (Pre-Intermediate)

This 12-week course is for students with an IELTS (or equivalent) score of 4.5 who want to improve their English and learn about UK culture. You'll increase your current IELTS score by the University of Sunderland equivalent of 1.5 bands. Plus, you'll learn important academic skills like note-taking, making presentations and writing essays and reports. Once you've completed the course, you'll get a Foundation Certificate Achievement in English for Academic Purposes and be able to study the University course you've chosen.

EAP 4 - square

Online EAP: Pre-sessional English (Intermediate)

We welcome applications from those with an IELTS or equivalent score of 5 or above with no individual skill score (speaking, listening, reading and writing) lower than 4.5. If your level of English is higher than IELTS 5 you can study this course and achieve a score 1 band higher than your entry score. You'll learn skills like note-taking, speaking in seminars, making presentations, writing essays and much more.

Full-time

Online EAP: Pre-sessional English (Pre-Intermediate)

We welcome applications from those with an IELTS or equivalent score of 4.5 or above with no individual skill score (speaking, listening, reading and writing) lower than 4. Online EAP: Pre-sessional English (Upper Intermediate)

This eight-week course is for people with an IELTS score of 5.5 who want to improve their English. Using our digital and open-access language labs, independent study, and visits to local and national places of interest, you'll get the skills you need to study your chosen degree.

Programmes to suit you

We offer three lengths of programme depending on your existing language level:

  • Pre-Intermediate – 12 weeks
  • Intermediate – 10 weeks
  • Upper-Intermediate – 8 weeks

High-quality teaching

The courses offered aim to expand your knowledge and skills to the level required to study a University level degree successfully. You will take part in live online workshops, lectures and have regular contact with your teachers, whilst completing work all from the comfort of your own home.

You will also be working on a group project which will require you to work with classmates from all around the world. There is a cultural element to the programmes which also aims to better orientate you to the University of Sunderland when you eventually join us in the UK.
