Can I work in the UK during my studies?

Home / FAQs / International students / Working while you study / Working during studies

While you are studying in the UK your Student visa might let you work.

If you're allowed to work, it will usually say so on your vignette (the stamp in your passport) or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP card).

It should include how many hours you can work each week so it'is important to understand the rules around when and how much you can work.

You can work 20-hours each week in term time or full time during holidays if you're studying:

  • A course at degree level or above (RQF level 6 +)

You can work ten hours each week during term time or full time during holidays if you're studying:

  • An English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course

Paid and unpaid voluntary work also counts towards your working hours each week.

You can't:

  • Be self-employed
  • Work at a professional sportsperson (including sports coach)
  • Work as an entertainer
  • Work as a doctor or dentist in training

If you work more than hours than you're allowed in term time you'll be breaking the rules of your visa. That means you could be taken off your course and reported to the Home Office.

If you're on a short-term study visa you can't work in the UK.

Check your BRP and make sure all conditions you have been given, including working rights, are right.

If you think there's been a mistake on your BRP you'll need to report it online by following the instructions on the government website.
