Case Study

Reka Imreh

BA (Hons) Business and Management with Integrated Foundation Year

Reka is in the third year of her BA (Hons) in Business and Management with Integrated Foundation Year at the University of Sunderland in London. She tells us about life as a student under lockdown and the role of a Course Rep during COVID-19.

If I end up launching my own business in the future, I know what I’m learning will be so useful.

"Before I came to the University, I was working full time and studying to be a nail technician.

I started off with the aim of going into Events Management, but after thinking about it for a while, I decided business was right for me.

One day, I hope to own my own nail salon. That’s not to say I’m not still interested in events, maybe I’ll go back and study that one day too!

I chose the University based on the feedback I found on it. When you start having a look around, you find out so many great things about the place. It made the decision to apply easy.

Plus, at the time, the location was very convenient. Although the lockdown has made that a little less relevant for me, I still think the area so near to Canary Wharf is a great place to study.

Thinking about the modules I’ve been studying I have to say the Human Resources one was really enjoyable.

If I end up launching my own business in the future, I know what I’m learning will be so useful.

Studying under COVID-19 has been a challenge for all of us, students and lecturers alike.

On top of all the obstacles I’m facing while studying online, like finding a quiet place to work and dealing with poor internet connections, I’m also a Course Rep.

I represent the other students I study with to the wider University, but it also means I have a lot of extra stuff to do.

Lots of students are struggling with technology right now, so I try and do my best to be there for them and help if I can.

Of course, it’s more enjoyable when teaching is face-to-face. Plenty of us have kids at home or are trying to balance working with distance learning.

But I feel like I, and my fellow students, are all getting through this really well. It’s helped that we’ve had so much support from the University.

For anyone thinking about doing their degree here, I would highly recommend it.

I’m sure, whatever your plans are, you’ll be able to find the right course for you."
