About Dr. Atefeh (Ati) Omrani
I am Programme Manager, Senior Lecturer, Module Leader & Researcher in Nursing Practice at the University of Sunderland in London, where I also lead on the Research Excellence Framework (REF) UoA. My work additionally spans Public Health and Health & Applied Social Science, supporting interdisciplinary teaching, research, and leadership.
I bring over 16 years of combined experience across healthcare, nursing and midwifery, research, higher and further education, and course management, providing a strong foundation in leadership, teaching, and programme development.
With a professional background and hands-on experience in midwifery and nursing, I have previously held academic roles including Module Leader, Course Director, Lecturer, and Deputy Programme Manager, contributing to curriculum development, academic leadership, and student-centred education.
Research
I hold a PhD in Health and Applied Social Sciences from St Mary’s University, Twickenham, London, and conduct research in Health & Applied Social Science, Public Health, Nursing, and Midwifery. I have extensive experience in women’s health, breast health, adolescent health, health education, and public health research. My PhD research focused on evaluating the impact of a comprehensive breast health education intervention on adolescent girls’ knowledge, attitudes, and engagement with positive breast health behaviours (e.g., breast self-checks, wearing supportive sports bras) within school settings.
The educational resources developed and tested during my PhD have been significantly improved and implemented in practice. These resources were contributed to and featured on the Treasure Your Chest website - https://www.treasureyourchest.org/(opens in new tab), an initiative providing free, evidence-based breast health resources for schools.
Areas of expertise
I have 12+ years of research experience working in multidisciplinary teams across public health, healthcare, midwifery, nursing and health education. My expertise spans a range of methodologies, including survey design and development, as well as the implementation and evaluation of interventions using both quantitative and qualitative approaches (e.g., surveys, interviews, focus groups). I have published research in these areas and continue to explore evidence-based strategies to improve health outcomes.
My research interests include breast health and cancer, women’s health and well-being, public health, health education, health promotion, intervention design and evaluation, survey development, reliability and validity assessment, and mixed-methods research.
I welcome enquiries regarding PhD research projects in these and related areas.
