What qualifications do you accept?
If English isn't your first language, you should have at least one of the following qualifications (or equivalent):
You need an overall score of 6.0, with at least 5.5 or higher in each component: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. An alternative approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) will also be accepted if your element scores are equivalent to those required for IELTS. After 6 April 2015, you must take your IELTS exams at one of the test centres listed on the UKVI website.
The English Language Proficiency Test (ELPT) objectively measures the current language level of a candidate wishing to study at the University, or any of the University of Sunderland's campuses worldwide.
The test measures whether you has met the minimum language entry requirements of the University, as laid out in the rules and regulations for international students. If you are a Home or an EU student who has not studied in English, you might be asked to sit the exam depending on your previous qualifications.
The test is run by the English for Academic Purposes and Study Skills department at the University. The results are non-transferrable. It's important to note that other institutions might not recognise the results or transcripts.
What you'll be tested on
The ELPT assesses the four key skill areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Your knowledge will be tested on each of these areas, with the aim of demonstrating your academic ability alongside your language knowledge. Some tasks are academic in nature to give you the chance to demonstrate the skills you will need on your course or pre-sessional programme.
The test is benchmarked against the International English Language Testing System, but does have some differences in terms of structure and task choice.
