Meet 2023 graduate Jennifer Okenyi, who studied MSc International Business Management (now MSc Global Business Management(opens in new tab)).

Jennifer is the founder and creative director of JNwany Designs(opens in new tab), a growing luxury womenswear brand that had the privilege of showcasing its latest collection at London Fashion Week in early 2026.

"I've always been devoted to fashion," says Jennifer. Originally from Nigeria, she founded her business in 2017, initially creating custom pieces for individual clients.

Building business foundations

Driven to expand her company and build business foundations, she decided to pursue a Global Business MSc.

She chose the University of Sunderland in London for “its location, which provided ample networking opportunities, and also its diverse student community.”

During her time at UoSiL, Jennifer learned to construct a business strategy and consider wider marketplace trends. "As the founder of JNwany, I'm solely responsible for marketing, research, and budgeting, and I owe a lot of that knowledge to my MSc," she reflected.

“I don’t just think about the clothes, I think about the business, what is happening in the wider marketplace. Thanks to my MSc, I am a more strategic thinker.”

Jennifer also took on the role of a Digital Coach, which involved engaging with students and assisting with technical queries.

She credits that experience with giving her the self-confidence to connect with industry professionals at networking events.

Establishing her fashion brand

After graduating, she relocated to Belfast and continued developing her business alongside working in HR. Jennifer's passion and commitment paid off when, in February 2026, one of her collections was showcased at London Fashion Week.

Not stopping there, Jennifer’s long-term ambition is to produce more opportunities for emerging creatives. In September 2026, she collaborated with Ulster University to organise the inaugural Belfast Emerging Fashion Showcase.

The event brought together designers, models, and photographers to spotlight underrepresented talent. "I want to put Belfast on the fashion map," she said.

Jennifer’s journey from MSc student to fashion founder highlights the impact of combining creativity with strong business foundations. She continues to make her mark on the fashion industry, both in Belfast and beyond. “The university is a key part of why my business is successful,” concludes Jennifer.
