In mid-March, MSc International Business Management students gained practical experience in corporate strategising and solving real-world business tasks, guided by Chris Chidley, Chief Commercial Officer (Asia-Pacific region) - Compass Group plc.
‘Students couldn’t get much closer to the boardroom.’
Back in January, the University of Sunderland in London welcomed Chris Chidley to campus to introduce Compass Group and set MSc International Business Management (IBM) students a real-life commercial task. Focused on sustainable long-term growth in Compass’ multi-billion-dollar Asia-Pacific Region over the next 18 months.
“Chris gave students a real-world business task relating to strategic decision-making at Compass – our students couldn’t get much closer to the boardroom.” – said IBM Programme Manager, Dr. Alessandro Ferrazza, who led the initiative.

Over six weeks, students then worked in groups to research and build a business plan, applying knowledge gained from the IBM programme’s Strategic Management and Foresight module - before presenting to Chris Chidley, academic staff, and fellow students. A total of 30 students presented across six groups.
Applying complex theoretical models to the real-world
The students demonstrated strong understanding of the Asia-Pacific marketplace and Compass’ operations - including country-specific characteristics in India, Japan, and Singapore - and the opportunities and challenges in the region’s food service provision.

Following each presentation, Chris and Alessandro provided students with feedback, praising them for how well they had applied complex theoretical models – including the Four Quadrants (BCG Positions) and Pestle analysis - to the task.

Godsfavour Ogechukwu, IBM student, reflected - “It was an interesting and engaging task enhanced by thought-provoking feedback and questions. I’m aiming to develop a career in financial services, so this hands-on experience was incredibly relevant.”
‘A huge success for me personally and for Compass group’

“This has been a huge success for me personally and for Compass group – especially the way the students have prepared and presented themselves, and the level of professionalism they’ve demonstrated. I hope this collaboration will continue.” - Chris Chidley, Chief Commercial Officer (Asia-Pacific) - Compass Group plc.
“I am grateful to Chris for sharing his valuable real-world business insight. Developing such industry relationships truly enhances student learning and employability. I look forward welcoming Chris back to the university.” - Dr. Alessandro Ferrazza.
