We meet Favour Okuonghae and Faraday Osemeke Uwaya, MSc Project Management students, who recently completed a two-week internship with OCS, a global facilities service group (who also manage UoSiL's facilities).
The internship provided them with hands-on experience in project management, and informed them of potential career paths to pursue after completing their degrees.
"The internship was really relevant to my future career plans," said Faraday. He continued, “We had a range of responsibilities, including working on project briefs, attending meetings with subcontractors, preparing documentation, and working with Microsoft Project.”
Hands-on experience in project management
After spotting the opportunity on a campus poster, the students submitted applications highlighting their skills and experience. They then progressed to the next stage and were invited to interviews with a panel of three OCS staff members.
As well as gaining interview experience, the internship allowed Favour and Faraday to apply what they had learnt at university in a professional setting.
They also developed new skills; Favour commented, “Working with really supportive colleagues gave me the confidence to speak up and not be afraid to ask questions. The role also involved constant communication with clients, so I developed a skill for liaising with them knowledgeably and professionally.”

The students worked on a range of projects during their time at OCS, both onsite and in the office. The fortnight finished with them presenting their learnings to colleagues, and they were also asked to discuss their future career goals.

Both Favour and Faraday noted that they plan to enter the construction industry. Faraday expressed, "I'm leaning towards construction, but I'm eager to gain more practical experience to learn which particular area I'd like to specialise in."
Over two weeks, the students gained experience in the sector they plan to work in, developed their professional skills, and increased their confidence. They were able to reflect on their experiences and are now both more equipped to enter the job market after completing their studies.
