Muiz Olatunji Hassan

Before moving to the United Kingdom to pursue my MSc, I worked as a Project Support Officer for a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) company specialising in digital transformation, enterprise document management and workflow automation. In that role, I supported projects for organisations in the financial services and property sectors. The experience gave me a first-hand understanding of how successful project delivery depends on effective planning, collaboration, stakeholder engagement and leadership. It inspired me to pursue an MSc in Project Management(opens in new tab) so that I could build on my practical experience by developing internationally recognised knowledge and learning industry best practice.

After completing my MSc, I hope to build a career in project and programme management, supporting the successful delivery of projects that create real value for organisations and the people they serve. Throughout my studies, I have developed a deeper understanding of project governance, stakeholder engagement and strategic delivery, and I am excited to apply these skills in a professional environment. My immediate goal is to contribute to high-performing project teams, continue learning from experienced professionals and gain experience of complex projects. In the long term, I aspire to lead large-scale projects, manage multidisciplinary teams and deliver projects that drive innovation, improve services and create sustainable outcomes. I see this degree as an important foundation for a career built on continuous learning, collaboration and making a positive impact.

The University of Sunderland in London stood out to me because of its combination of practical learning, strong links with industry and excellent support for international students. I wanted to study in an environment where I could learn from experienced lecturers while engaging with students from different countries and professional backgrounds. Another major reason for my decision was the University’s location in Canary Wharf, one of London’s leading financial and business districts. Its proximity to global banks, multinational organisations and international businesses offers valuable opportunities to attend industry events, build professional networks and gain insights that extend beyond the classroom. For someone aspiring to build a career in project management, that environment was incredibly appealing.

As I build my career, I am particularly interested in working on projects within the technology sector, especially those involving digital transformation, innovation and IT project delivery. My previous experience introduced me to technology-enabled projects and inspired me to build a career in which I can contribute to delivering solutions that improve the way organisations operate. I also have a strong interest in the financial services sector, where effective project management plays a key role in delivering change, improving operational efficiency and supporting business growth. In addition, I would welcome opportunities within healthcare, particularly with the NHS and other healthcare organisations, where successful project delivery can directly improve services and positively affect people’s lives. Ultimately, I am looking for an organisation that values collaboration, innovation and continuous improvement, where I can grow professionally while contributing to projects that make a meaningful difference.

I enjoyed both the lectures and the independent learning throughout my MSc journey. The lectures encouraged discussion, collaboration and the sharing of different perspectives, while independent study gave me the opportunity to explore topics in greater depth, think critically and apply project management principles to real-world scenarios. Beyond my academic studies, I also wanted to make the most of university life by becoming involved in the wider community. One of the highlights of my journey was receiving the Global Citizen Award, which recognised my contribution beyond the classroom. Receiving this award was a proud moment because it reflected not only my academic commitment but also my willingness to engage with the University community and make a positive contribution.

My advice to future students is simple: 'Make the most of every opportunity.' When I first arrived in London, I never imagined that my journey would include working with the Students’ Union and receiving the Global Citizen Award while preparing for a career in project management. Those experiences reminded me that the opportunities you embrace outside the classroom can be just as valuable as the knowledge you gain within it.

Your university experience is about much more than earning a degree. Attend networking events, connect with your lecturers, participate in university activities and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Some of the most valuable lessons and opportunities come from experiences beyond the classroom.

Looking back, choosing the University of Sunderland in London was one of the best decisions I have made. It has challenged me, broadened my perspective and given me opportunities to grow in ways I never expected. The knowledge, friendships and experiences I have gained here will stay with me throughout my career. Enjoy every moment, stay curious, work hard and believe in yourself. The journey goes by much faster than you think, and every experience has the potential to shape your future.
