About Dr. Patrick Igulot
I am a lecturer in Health and Social Care at the University of Sunderland in London. I teach the BSc in Health and Social Care (Top-Up) course and the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care. In the Top-Up degree, I teach a range of modules including Substance Use and Society, Life Course Approach to Health, Wellbeing, and Aging, and Research Dissertation, among others. In the Foundation Degree course, I teach Exploring Psychosocial Theory, Understanding Health and Social Care, Dimensions of Health and Social Care, and Developing Independent Learning and Professionalism in Social Science, among others.
Research
I hold a PhD in Sociology from City, University of London, where I specialised in health and HIV/AIDS. My PhD focused on the vulnerability and risk to HIV infection in Uganda.
I examined the influence of social factors on vulnerability and risk of HIV infection in Uganda, specifically investigating the impact of socio-economic status, sexual and gender-based violence, and related social and structural factors.

Areas of expertise
I am a mixed-methods researcher with expertise in quantitative methods, including multilevel modelling of demographic and health survey data from Sub-Saharan Africa.
My research interests are broadly focused on understanding the relationship between health and society, applied health research, and implementation science.
Specifically, my research interests include HIV/AIDS, health service research, social statistics, and social epidemiology.
I welcome enquiries regarding potential PhD research projects in these and related areas.
Further information
I became a Fellow of Advance HE (formerly the Higher Education Academy) in March 2020. I hold an MA in Sociology and a BA in Social Science, both from Makerere University, Uganda. I have nearly 20 years of combined experience in research, programme and organisational management in the context of HIV/AIDS and Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as teaching in the UK.
