A University of Sunderland in London business management student, who only started running a year ago is set to take on the 2026 TCS London Marathon, raising money for the University of Sunderland Futures Fund.
A year ago, Maria Budakova, Business Management BA (Top-up)(opens in new tab) student, felt breathless after 60 seconds of running and decided it was time to transform her fitness.
Taking inspiration from the NHS Couch to 5k(opens in new tab) exercise plan, and over many months, Maria built up her fitness to complete the Ealing Half Marathon last September.
Ever focused on the next challenge, Maria decided - “I now want to complete a full marathon – it makes perfect sense.”
Valuable support for students
For Maria, securing a space with the university and raising money for the Futures Fund provides added motivation.

“I’ve seen, first-hand, how valuable support like the Futures Fund can be. Being able to raise money for something that directly helps students is a brilliant way to give back while doing something I love.”
“This feels like such a personal opportunity,” explains Maria “not just to represent the university, but to challenge myself in a way I’ve been working towards for a long time.”
A global marathon journey
“Running has become such a big part of my health, fitness, and confidence.” says Maria - who, alongside her studies, works as a global security support centre team Leader for S&P Global.
“Once I have successfully completed the London Marathon, my next goal will be to take on the challenge of the Abbots World Marathon Majors – including Belin, Boston and Tokyo.”
As she looks ahead to April and the London Marathon, Maria concludes - “I am proud to be running for the Futures Fund and carrying the university’s name through the streets of London.”
The TCS London Marathon(opens in new tab) takes place on Sunday, 26 April 2026 with the route passing by the university’s new London campus in South Quay.
