Nida Saleh

My name is Nida Saleh, and I am currently studying Engineering Management at the University of Sunderland in London. Before starting my studies, I had the honour of becoming Pakistan’s first female train driver. This achievement was a proud milestone in my life and showed me that determination, hard work and self-belief can break barriers. However, I also realised that, to continue developing my technical expertise and contribute at a higher level, I needed to strengthen my knowledge of engineering, leadership and management. I chose Engineering Management because it combines technical knowledge with leadership skills. Throughout my career in the railway industry, I have gained valuable practical experience in engineering operations, safety and teamwork. I wanted to build on this experience by learning how to manage engineering projects, lead teams effectively, improve operational performance and make strategic decisions. This course provides the perfect balance between engineering principles and management practices, preparing me for leadership roles within the engineering and transport sectors.

After completing my course, I would like to take on a leadership position. I want to use the knowledge I gain from my degree to improve engineering operations, manage large-scale projects and support innovation within the industry. I also hope to continue breaking barriers by encouraging and mentoring more women to pursue careers in engineering. I believe diversity strengthens organisations, and I want to help create opportunities for future generations.

I chose the University of Sunderland in London because of its excellent reputation for delivering career-focused education and its commitment to preparing students for the global workplace. The University offers a supportive learning environment, experienced lecturers and practical teaching that connects theory with real-world applications. Studying in London also provides exposure to one of the world’s leading business and engineering centres, where I can learn from diverse cultures, build professional networks and gain a broader understanding of international engineering management practices.

The University has also given me the opportunity to work as a Student Ambassador and as part of the Students’ Union Crew. These experiences are helping me develop valuable professional skills and will support me in achieving my long-term career ambitions.

In the future, I would like to work in the railway, transport or business sector, where I can combine my operational experience with my Engineering Management education. I am particularly interested in organisations that focus on innovation, engineering excellence, safety and sustainable development. I also aspire to take on senior leadership roles where I can influence organisational growth, develop engineering talent and promote diversity within the industry.

I truly enjoy my studies, both in lectures and through independent learning. The lectures provide valuable insights from experienced academics and encourage discussion of real engineering and management challenges. At the same time, independent study allows me to research current industry trends, deepen my understanding of engineering management concepts and apply what I learn to my own professional experience. I enjoy connecting classroom knowledge with the practical lessons I have learned throughout my railway career. This combination makes my learning experience both meaningful and rewarding.

My message to future students is to believe in your abilities and never be afraid to challenge yourself. Success comes through dedication, continuous learning and perseverance. University is not only about earning a degree; it is about developing the knowledge, confidence and skills needed to achieve your goals and make a positive impact in the world. I encourage every student to make the most of every opportunity, stay curious, work hard and never give up on their dreams.
