Graduation Summer 2023

The word “congratulations” echoed around the historic Southwark Cathedral as over 500 University of Sunderland in London students graduated in ceremonies, held over 13 and 14 June 2023.

The iconic Southwark Cathedral in central London provided a stunning backdrop for the ceremonies, lending an air of grandeur and significance to the proceedings. The graduates, their families, guests and faculty members gathered with anticipation, eagerly awaiting to celebrate the graduates’ achievement, a culmination of years of hard work and dedication. We are excited to share some amazing moments from the event, which was filled with a sense of achievement and festivity.

The ceremonies on 14 June opened with a speech from University of Sunderland Vice-Chancellor, Sir David Bell, who said that the event marked “a celebration of the Class of 2023” and “a public recognition of their achievement”.

Pro-Chancellor, Margaret Fay, commended the “commitment, professionalism and hard work” shown by the graduates as they “embark on the next stage of their lives, ready to make a difference in the world”.

Jonny Emmerson, Head of Student Administration and Systems, whose department leads the organisation of the graduation ceremonies, said "Thank you to colleagues from multiple departments who helped make the graduations such a success. We welcomed over 1800 graduates and guests across the two days, and it was a real pleasure to see so many of the graduates celebrate their successes with their friends and family.”

Meet some of our recent graduates

Former international footballer achieves his goals 

Graduating with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the ceremony was Sami Al-Jaber, a celebrated football player. Sami, who played as a striker over his 20-year career, represented his country at four consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments.

Sami, who joined the university to continue his education journey, explained “The University of Sunderland in London is just amazing in all aspects … and they are really supporting me to achieve my future goals and vision.”

Being supported by the University to succeed  

Graduating came with a real sense of achievement for Adina Toma, who received a BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care (Top Up) qualification. Adina explained that the past year had been a “personal rollercoaster” of intense study alongside her nursing role at Barnet Hospital, but, with the “all-round support” she received at the university, she achieved her goals. 

Adina explained how the pandemic had delayed her studies as she worked alongside her NHS colleagues on the front line caring for patients. However, following her studies at the University of Sunderland in London, explained how she now planned to continue her educational development.

As our graduates step into the next chapter of their lives, they do so equipped with the knowledge, skills, and experiences gained from their studies at the University of Sunderland in London. Their remarkable journey has prepared them to make a positive impact in their chosen fields, and their accomplishments serve as an inspiration to future generations of students. 

The University of Sunderland in London congratulates all the graduates on their incredible achievements and wishes them continued success in their future endeavours.
