On 6 November, students came together with family, friends, and university staff to celebrate their success and graduate from the University.
Across two ceremonies, hundreds of students (or graduands) walked across the stage at London's historic Southwark Cathedral to be greeted by Chancellor, Leanne Cahill who then confirmed their awards.
There were smiles, hugs and congratulations all round as the achievements and efforts of our students were publicly recognised - as they looked, excitedly, towards the future.
At the graduations, the university also recognised two outstanding female role models - Professor Jill Manthorpe CBE, social work and social care researcher, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Health, and entrepreneur Natnicha Srichamnarn was named Alumni Achiever of the Year!
Natnicha Srichamnarn, originally from Nakhon Ratchasima, in north-east Thailand, came to the University of Sunderland in London to study for her MBA in 2015.
She launched her own health and wellness business, Nicha Group Ltd, in 2020, and went on to great success, winning the High Flyer 50 Global Icon Award and was a finalist at last year’s Women of the Future Awards.
"Studying at the University of Sunderland in London was the best decision I ever made. It has opened so many doors – it was truly life-changing."
Professor Jill Manthorpe CBE complete a BA in English Literature at the University of York, then moved to London to work for Age UK in its press department. She completed a Master's degree in social policy at the University of Hull, then taught and completed research in both health and social care.
In 2001 she was appointed Professor and Director of the Social Care Workforce Research Unit at King's College London, and in 2023, in recognition of her extensive contribution to social work and social care research, Jill was appointed Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in the late Queen’s final honours list.
Professor Manthorpe said it was "immense privilege" to receive her honorary award and she looks forward "to continuing her collaboration with the University’s impressive staff and students."
