With around 7.1 million people in the UK now listening each week, podcasts are one of the most popular ways we entertain ourselves. There are nearly 1 million shows to choose from, with millions of episodes to enjoy, so finding the one for you can be tricky. As a student, there are loads of podcasts out there to give you advice and ideas or just to entertain you. We’ve put together some of our favourites to try out.
How to listen to podcasts
There are a few different ways you can listen to podcasts. The easiest is to just find them on the website where it’s hosted. If you prefer, you can download them on your phone. To do that you’ll need an app.
If you have an iPhone, we’d recommend the Apple Podcast app. If you have an Android or something similar, try any of these. Then simply search the name of the podcast you’re interested in and get listening.
1) Sunderland Talks
Our favourite podcast is the brilliant Sunderland Talks. The University of Sunderland brings together their experts to talk about big ideas and things in the news that are linked to their industry-leading research. The show features in-depth conversations on everything from workplace wellbeing to veganism.
2) College Geek
One of the best shows out there for university students. Each week, you’ll get help and advice on doing your best during your studies. They cover a huge range of topics, from becoming more productive and getting better grades to your life after uni including applying for jobs and planning your future.
3) Tiny Leaps, Big Changes
This podcast is all about self-development and growing as a person. University is a great time in your life to grow and work towards becoming the person you want to be. This show will help get you there. Hosted by entrepreneur Gregg Clunis, you’ll get tips on finding the direction you want your life to go in and the motivation to reach your goals.
4) The Intelligence
The daily podcast from the people at The Economist - one of the world’s most popular and long-running news publications. The Intelligence gives you expert insight into the biggest stories of the week from around the world. It’s a great way to stay up to date with the political, economic and business news you need to know about.
5) No Such Thing As A Fish
For the last of our top five, we thought we’d share a really fun one. No Such Thing As A Fish is a podcast from the researchers at the TV show QI. Each week they present four facts from around the world. They’re always weird and wonderful and the show combines interesting information with lots of jokes so you feel like you’re learning something while you’re laughing.
There seems to be a podcast out there for everything these days. So whatever you’re interested in, you’re guaranteed to find something that suits you. We’d love to know about your favourite shows. Share your recommendations with the community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #WeAreSunLon.
