Olukunmi is a passionate student studying for his MSc in International Business Management with us here at the University of Sunderland in London. In this case study, he talks about what he’s getting from the course and how his modules are affecting his plans for the future.
I knew there’s a whole world of business out there to explore, if I could just get the education, I needed to take that next step.
“I’m doing the MSc International Business Management course to give myself some insight into the world of global work.
I originally come from Nigeria, where I ran a small business in Construction and Project Management.
That experience gave me a passion for work and entrepreneurship generally. But I wanted something more.
I knew there’s a whole world of business out there to explore, if I could just get the education, I needed to take that next step.
When I found the University of Sunderland in London, I knew it was the right place for me.
There’s a lot in the course you learn, but I suppose the most impactful in terms of what I’m passionate about is the Global Strategy and International Human Resources Management modules.
The former is giving me insights into the different types of companies out there in the world, from the smallest business to huge multinationals.
Plus, it’s all wrapped up in the strategic thought behind entering new markets.
Basically, I’m learning what it would take to grow and expand a business into something successful on the international stage.
The HR Management module is so interesting too. It’s all about understanding cultural differences and how to take a strategic approach to managing your employees.
That’s not something I’ve spent a lot of time thinking of in the past, so it’s worthwhile learning about.
All in all, the course is getting me closer to reaching my goal. My long-term aim is to work with companies to help them grow both locally and internationally.
I’d love to run my own business using what I’ve learned at the University. It’s kind of exciting thinking about all the new things I could do.
Of course, this is all happening in the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. I must be honest; it’s been challenging at times.
It’s also been a bit boring. I’ve found I really miss interacting with people face-to-face in class.
I love the University because you get to meet and connect with people from all these different cultures. You have the chance to understand them and expand your horizons.”
