For me, there really is no better place in the world to study business management.
MSc International Business Management
In 2019, Peter Rose graduated from the University of Sunderland in London with a Distinction in his MBM (Master of Business Management) degree. As a follow up to his earlier case study, he reflects on where the course has taken him and what the future might look like.
For me, there really is no better place in the world to study business management.
“The Greek philosopher Aristotle said ‘Education is an ornament in prosperity and a refuge in adversity.’
That’s what the University of Sunderland in London was for me, a place of learning where I was able to build something for my future.
When I was studying in 2018-19 at the University, my degree was called the MBM, or Master of Business Management.
These days, it’s the MSc International Business Management course.
It was on the course that I gained the experience needed for my job. Pretty much straight out of University, I was hired as a Graduate Intern Rental Income Support Officer at Hammersmith and Fulham Council.
It wasn’t long, either, before I was promoted to Property Procurement Support Officer, but it was the graduate scheme that got me my start.
I was mentored in the specifics of the role, given training and development, along with networking opportunities that guided me through to my promotion.
None of this would have been possible without my time at the University of Sunderland in London.
My course taught so much, but it’s the transferrable skills that I’ve found most useful. Things like communication, organisation, time management and problem-solving are invaluable.
Plus, the commitment it takes to attend your lectures really gives you the ability to deal with different aspects of business, from resolving team conflicts to compromising in negotiations and even just being on time to meetings and hitting deadlines.
I originally got interested in business management because I wanted a broad, and global, understanding of the sector.
I wasn’t sure where I would end up specifically after graduation, but my studies really helped to inform the direction of my career.
Through the course, I learned more about council work. Now, my current goal is to become a Property Procurement Manager in the Housing Department.
I applied to the University for a lot of reasons, but one of the most important to me was the location.
London is such a cosmopolitan city and the opportunity to study in the heart of the world’s financial sector was hard to pass up.
For me, there really is no better place in the world to study business management.”
