2023 MBA Cybersecurity graduate, Jovita Okejim, explains the value of gaining new skills and how studying at the University of Sunderland in London has made her more of a strategic thinker.
“There’s a strong connection between what I do now and what I studied during my MBA”, says Jovita, who works as a Senior Delivery Manager with UK Research and Innovation – the primary public body that invests in research and innovation, bringing research councils across the UK together.
“The Master of Business Administration course taught me to be more of a strategic thinker and to make more informed, data-driven decisions.” - essential skills for success in her role in agile project management, facilitating the delivery of projects that create value for UKRI.
Jovita had already gained professional experience before starting her MBA but says that the course ‘expanded her thinking’ and helped her see the broad range of career possibilities ahead.
She also talks passionately about the value of gaining new skills - “I really believe that with any new skill or knowledge acquired, the main beneficiary is you. You are the one taking the knowledge, internalising it, and translating it into value for organisations.”
Following her graduation, Jovita also grabbed the opportunity to complete an internship with the university in the marketing team, where she got to grips with applications such as Adobe InDesign and learned the importance of consistency in organisational branding.
Like many students, Jovita faced some challenges during her studies but explains that the “…support of lecturers who believed in me encouraged me to keep going, no matter what.”
“I’m very thankful to the university - for the opportunities it gave me, for the network it exposed me to, and for helping me on my journey to where I am today.”
