Most of our students start their course with one main goal; to achieve their dream career, whether that be working in a big firm, running a successful business, or following their own passion.
Tomas Spacil, who works at the University of Sunderland in London as a Video Content Producer, tells us how he achieved the first step in his dream career working in the film production industry.
In addition to his role at the University, Tomas managed to secure a position working with the production team of the film, Empire of Light, written, directed, and co-produced by the famous Sam Mendes.
Originally from Slovakia, Tomas graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University in 2021 with honours, specialising in Film, Radio, and Television Studies. Tomas secured his job at the University immediately after his graduation, thanks to his dedication and exceptional talent.
Tomas tells us more about his journey at the University of Sunderland in London and the Empire of Light film set:
“My attraction to the film industry started when I was a kid. I have always been interested in what's happening behind the scenes, how the shots are made, whether the locations are real or built specifically for the film, and what actors are like in real life. I wanted to know how the images on TV are made, from finding the location to the actual take.
I knew I would be working in film and I never stopped believing in my dream. The University gave me the opportunity and flexibility to make this happen, which I'm grateful for.
Working for the University of Sunderland in London has been challenging at times, but worth all the hard moments, as it helped me gain the necessary experience and feel certain that video production is the career I’d like to pursue.
During my time here I have been supported by the University and my team with additional courses and training, which helped me develop my knowledge and gain new skills.
I was lucky enough to be a part of the production of the film, Empire of Light, and work with some of the most iconic people in the film industry, such as Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg. I feel like this opportunity took me a step closer to where I would like to be in the future.
One piece of advice I would give our fellow students at the University is to have the confidence to speak more and do more. If English is not your first language, don't allow the language barrier to hold you back. Believe in yourself and follow your dreams.”
