Marketing is an essential part of any business, whether you’re running a tourism company or a care home.

That diversity means marketers are found in every industry and with degrees in all kinds of subjects.

So, what are the steps you need to take if you’re interested in stepping into the exciting, fast-paced and growing world of marketing?

Understand it

The first thing you need to do before applying for a role in marketing is to understand what it is.

Online research will only get you so far in that area, so it’s worth considering doing some professional training.

Our free Digital Media Marketing short course is the perfect way to get started, covering everything from search engines like Google to social media sites such as FacebookTwitter and Instagram.

If you want to take things even further, you could enrol in our MBA Marketing degree where you’ll learn about the sector with an international business focus.

Grow your skills

In the digital age, marketing is always growing and changing. This is why staying on top of the latest developments is essential.

Take a look at some job descriptions for the kinds of skills expected of marketing professionals then find online training to match.

Common things recruiters want to see include photoshop and video editing, writing, content management systems (CMS – for editing and running websites) and customer relationship management tools (CRM – used to contact and track interactions).

Use LinkedIn

The social media site for professionals is a great way of getting in touch with people already working in the world of marketing.

You can use it to grow your network, showcase the skills you’re learning and look for jobs.

Make sure you join marketing groups and follow leaders in the industry. A good place to start is to Google lists of the top marketing companies and professionals.

They’ll all have profiles, so follow them and learn from the best.

Apply

Once you have followed all these steps, you will be ready to go for your dream job in marketing.

Make sure you are showing off all your hard work and reassure the hiring manager that you know what you’re doing.
