Raluca Antal, the 15,000th student at the University of Sunderland in London, and the Director Alan Hardie

April this year marked a very special milestone in the history of the University of Sunderland in London.

Less than two years after we welcomed the 10,000th student to walk through the doors of our Canary Wharf campus, we were inviting the 15,000th to follow in her footsteps.

Raluca Antal joined us to study for her BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship (Top-Up) in April this year aiming to pursue her dream of working for herself.

“Every entrepreneurial journey starts somewhere,” she said, “Having the chance to study this course not only expands my knowledge, but it also gives me a clear understanding of what I want to become in the future.”

To mark the occasion, we invited Raluca to the building which has just started opening for on-site classes and student services following the restrictions imposed on our community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Whilst here, she met the Director of the University of Sunderland in London, Alan Hardie who presented her with a certificate recognising the occasion and a reward of the total amount of her tuition fee.

“When I found out I was getting the cost of my degree paid for me, I quickly realised I had no words that could actually describe how lucky and fortunate I am.” - Raluca said.

She told us about her reasons for choosing to apply to us, saying, “I liked the approach the University takes with my course. I’ve just started studying, but so far, the first module has been captivating. I’ve found the lecturers are so supportive and encouraging, helping to grow our knowledge. And it helps that I have friends and family who studied the same course here, so I had their recommendations to rely on.”

“It was a delight meeting Raluca. I think her being the 15,000th person to join our community shows how welcoming we are as an institution and hope that the high-quality education we provide will continue to see us enrolling an ever-growing student population in the years ahead.” Alan Hardie, Director of the University of Sunderland in London.
