In early May, students were inspired by a series of Welcome Walking Tours around our local Canary Wharf and Docklands area, giving them real insight and practical knowledge as they commence their studies at the university – along with the chance to build connections with fellow students.
There is so much to see and experience in the Canary Wharf and Docklands area, from the ever-growing number of global food outlets, being inspired by the skyscrapers of some the world’s top companies, or just taking a moment’s peace by the docks – all just a short walk away from our campus.
It can, though, be a confusing place to navigate, even for those familiar with the area. Step forward, International Student Advisor (and UoSiL’s very own local guide), Darren Ramsay, who expertly led the tours, supported by colleagues.
“During the tour, students had the opportunity to explore our vibrant campus buildings, the Canary Wharf area, and local points of interest - gaining valuable insight and learning some interesting facts along the way.”.
Did you know?
Canary Wharf itself takes its name from the trade with the Canary Islands, when the area was a large working dock
Over 100,000 people work in the Canary Wharf area
Although famous for tall buildings, there are plenty of green spaces, including Jubilee Park (there’s even a farm in nearby Muchute!)
University beyond studying
Students praised the event for the newly gained knowledge and the entertaining delivery, emphasising the role of the walking tours in creating connections beyond studies. With one student saying how the walking tour had “Showed me how my university experience can be about much more than just studying”.
“The Welcome Walking Tours have left a lasting impression on students, equipping them with valuable knowledge, connections, and memories as they embark on their academic journey. I extend my gratitude to colleagues who contributed to the success of this event and look forward to providing further encouraging experiences for our student community.” - Darren Ramsay.
