Omar Mentesh recounts his engagement with the University of Sunderland's wellbeing team in London, highlighting how they supported him through his studies, past traumas, and becoming a father for the first time.
“If I were to advise a friend about improving their wellbeing, I would remind them that no one needs to face their struggles alone. The experience of dealing with the wellbeing team has led me to realise that rather than fighting, it is more worthwhile to seek peace.” Omar Mentesh, BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship
“I chose to study at the University of Sunderland in London because I was passionate about Business Management and Entrepreneurship. The course offered a detailed overview of the topic and its implications, which was very appealing to me. Additionally, I felt as though my learning would be more comprehensive due to being in a larger city like London.
Being a student can be tough and bring up a range of emotions, especially as I navigated my experience as an ex-prisoner who had served over 7 years, and the added stress of becoming a father for the first time. My mental health was starting to take its toll on me, and everything felt overwhelming. With no prior help for my emotions, it became increasingly difficult to concentrate on my studies.
I paid a visit to the reception, sitting in the waiting room, when I spotted a wellbeing poster which prompted me to act. I booked an appointment with the Health and Wellbeing team at their office located on the 4th floor.
When I started working with the team, the main issue was my struggle to manage my emotions and anxiety - I had not figured out what was causing it. However, her supportive style made me feel comfortable and open by creating a secure environment where I could investigate my feelings, as well as the source of my anxiousness, I felt a sense of relief immediately.
The assistance from the Wellbeing teamal and support, was essential in my quest for a degree. Furthermore, I've learned valuable knowledge and resources that will enable me to better recognize circumstances which provoke negative feelings and tension.
If I were to advise a friend about improving their wellbeing, I would remind them that no one needs to face their struggles alone. The experience of dealing with the wellbeing team has led me to realize that rather than fighting, it is more worthwhile to seek peace.”
