Entry Requirements and Qualifications

Different courses have different entry requirements. You’ll find what you need for each programme on its course page. If you find you don’t meet the entry requirements then there are still options available to you.

A number of our courses offer an alternate route into the programme. These include Foundation Degrees and Extended Programmes. You can find more information on all of our Foundation Degrees and Extended Programmes by searching our website.

If you already have a degree and want to study a programme which is at the same or lower level, you’d be classed as having Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ status).

An example of this is if you already have an MA and you’d like to return and study a BSc, you’d have ELQ status.

ELQ status is allowed but can affect your visa and finances - for example, you may not get Student Finance funding for the new course and if you’re an international student you may not be able to get a student visa.

If you’re self-funding and are allowed to study in the UK, you’re welcome to study as many programmes as you want.

This could be possible but the decision would be made by an academic tutor and would be based on what you previously studied.

Contact the Admissions on admissions-london@sunderland.ac.uk with details of your request, along with copies of your transcript and module information.

Yes - your qualifications don't expire. But some do change over time, and so some might be a little out of date.

For example, an A-Level in ICT from 15 years ago would have very different content from an A-Level ICT in 2016.

No - you will need certain GCSEs to study your course and have to have met them before you enrol.

Please get in touch with the Admissions team for advice on qualifications. If you're outside the UK the number is: +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or you can email them on: admissions-london@sunderland.ac.uk.

Even if your qualification isn't listed here, you might still be eligible. Please get in touch with our Admissions team for advice on +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at admissions-london@sunderland.ac.uk.

If you think you already know some of the topics covered in your course, either from previous learning or work experience, you might not need to study all of the course.

Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) is the name given to the process of credit that goes toward a qualification because of something you've learned in the past.

If you can get APL you won't have to learn the same topic again and could be exempt from a module, set of modules or a year of a course.

If you think you might be eligible for APL, please contact your course leader.

Your application and offer

For many of our courses, you can choose to study part-time. To find out if your course can be studied part-time, please contact our Admissions team at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

How your timetable will look depends on your course and won't be confirmed until close to when teaching starts.

That means we can't give you an example of what your timetable will look like.

You'll get your teaching timetable on enrollment week, which you'll get a schedule a few days before.

You'll get an unconditional offer if you've met all the things we ask for to study the programme and you have a guaranteed place.

If you get a conditional offer from us, you'll be able to study with us as long as you meet a few conditions.

These can include getting your predicted grades, securing a visa, giving us good references or passing clearance checks like the DBS disclosure

Please note, these are only examples and isn't meant to be a complete list of the conditions you could be asked to meet.

Unfortunately, we do sometimes have to reject applications.

There are a few reasons this could happen including being unsuccessful at your interview, not having enough experience, not getting the grades you were asked for or have certain criminal convictions.

If you want to talk through this issue, please contact our Admissions team at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

You'll get the conditions of your offer in your offer email.

If you have any questions, please contact our Admissions team at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

You don't need to accept your offer right away - you can take time to decide if you want to and talk about the offer with friends and family first.

If you applied through UCAS you'll see your deadline for accepting on UCAS Track.

If you sent your application straight to the University please contact our Admissions team at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk to find out more about your offer deadlines.

The time it takes to find out if you have a place at the University differs...

It depends on you, your application and how many other applications we have to look through, which means it does sometimes take a little longer than we'd like to respond.

Please know that we work through all applications as quickly as we can so you will hear from us as soon as possible.

That depends on the nature of your conviction and the course you're applying for.

You have to declare your conviction when you apply.

If we need any further information, we'll get in touch with you.

Please make sure you tell us about any disabilities or impairments you have on your application form.

We ask you for this so we can make sure there is the proper support available to you throughout your studies.

Your application has to have at least one reference.

If you can't give a reference, please contact our Admissions team at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

To meet the cancellation deadline you must send your right to cancel statement to us before the end of the cancellation period referred to above.

Effect of cancellation

If you cancel your contract in this way we'll reimburse you any payments you sent us under the contract. We will make the reimbursement without undue delay and within 14 days of receipt of your notification of cancellation where possible. We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used to pay us. You will not incur any fees as a result of any reimbursement.

Starting your course before the end of the cancellation period

Notwithstanding the above, if you ask us to let you start your course before the end of the cancellation period: (a) you will lose your cancellation right if your course completely finishes within the cancellation period and you had acknowledged that you would lose that right in these circumstances; and/or (b) you will retain your cancellation right if your course does not completely finish within the cancellation period, but you will have to pay us for what you have received until the time we were informed of your decision to cancel. The amount of the payment due to us would be calculated on the basis of the value of educational services received from us in relation to what you would have had to pay for your course as a whole if you had not cancelled.

Statutory rights

The right to cancel is a statutory right under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013. Once 14 days have passed you can still choose to cancel your Firm or Insurance choice, subject to UCAS deadlines and regulations.

Please note there are UCAS regulations that both the University and applicants need to take into account when making any changes to an application to study. Please refer to the UCAS website for further information.

Your statutory right of cancellation does not affect your right to withdraw from the University at other times, subject to any ongoing obligations you may have to the University as a result of your registration should you commence studies at the University.

Please also note that this cancellation right only applies if you have accepted the offer of study in the capacity of a consumer, (i.e. for purposes which are wholly or mainly outside your trade, business, craft or profession).

Interviews

If you can't make any of the dates you've been offered for your interview, you need to contact the Admissions team as soon as possible.

Get in touch with them at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email them at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

We'll try and rebook your appointment for a day that works better for you, but there are deadlines you have to meet in the application process, so we ask you to be as flexible as you can.

When you book your interview slot, you'll be sent an email confirming your place and telling you what to bring with you on the day.

Makes sure you check the email carefully.

How long the interview will take depends on the course you're interviewing for.

You'll be sent an invitation and confirmation email which will include information about the start and end time of the interview.

It will also have useful information like the location of your interview.

Yes, you can bring friends or family members with you to the interview.

But you will have to do the interview itself alone.

Your guests are welcome to use our facilities while they wait for you, including our cafe.

They can also walk freely around the campus or explore the local area.

The Admissions team will let you know if you were successful.

They'll either update your UCAS Track or send you an email so keep an eye on your Track and your inbox.

If you've not heard back from us within a few days of your interview, you can contact them at +44 (0)20 7531 2357 or email at recruitment-london@sunderland.ac.uk

• You won't need to attend an interview for all our courses.

• It's a chance for us to learn more about you and your interests in studying.

• You have to pass the interview to be offered a place on the course you applied for.

An applicant day is different

• It's a chance for you to find out more about us.

• You can learn about the course you're interested in, the lecturers who will teach you, our facilities and your new classmates.

• You don't have to go to an applicant day to study on the course, but we'd highly recommend you come and visit us.
