Milena Kichukova

BA (Hons) Business and Management

Milena Kichukova is a BA (Hons) Business and Management student here at the University of Sunderland in London. She tells us why she is switching industries and how our Flying Start programme has helped her navigate University life.

I applied to study at the University of Sunderland in London so I can back up my practical experience with the knowledge you get from a degree.

“I’ve had a long career in the service industry. I worked as a manager for lots of different companies, from cinemas and coffee shops to major restaurants.

But as rewarding as it’s been, a little while ago I decided it was time for change.

I have all that experience and I want to put it to good use. My idea is to work towards a role in Human Resources or Project Management.

That’s why I applied to study at the University of Sunderland in London, so I can back up my practical experience with the knowledge you get from a degree.

The specific course is ideal for my purposes because it’s broad enough to give me lots of options for my future.

We cover loads of interesting topics, which is giving me a well-rounded knowledge of all the different areas of business.

I’m starting to figure out where I might want to specialise going forward.

The University was recommended to me by a friend who had studied here already.

They got me interested, but it’s once I started looking into it in more detail that I decided this was the place for me.

The location is fantastic, of course, and it’s wonderful having the classes over only two days because it means I can still work part-time.

I also like the range of free courses on offer. They’ve meant I can explore different areas of interest, all of which is going towards the knowledge I’ll need for my future career.

Something worth mentioning is the Flying Start programme. It’s a great introduction to the course and what to expect from studying at the University and really easy to navigate.

The course helped me get a better understanding of what is expected of me as a student. It’s also useful as an introduction to the systems we use a lot, like Canvas and Compass, as well as how to check my timetable and who do contact if I need help.

I honestly couldn’t pinpoint the best bit of Flying Start though, it was all so useful.

I really like the way the information was presented and the videos the University staff put together.

If I had to highlight one part, it would be the Scholarship and Finance section though. It taught me how to apply for student finance which is obviously really important.

If you’re thinking about applying to the University, I would say just do it!

Gaining knowledge and skills can broaden your horizons, better your career prospects and develop you as an individual.”
