BA (Hons) Business and Management
Vivian Bamaiyi is a recent graduate from the University of Sunderland in London where she studied for her BA (Hons) Business Management degree. In this case study, she tells us how growing up around people running their own companies inspired her passion and led to her degree.
From a very young age, I knew I was going to run my own company one day.
“I just finished my business management course at the end of last year, so it’s nice to have a think back to my three years at the University and all that it’s given me.
I came to the UK from Cyprus where I was doing a foundation business course.
That degree was my introduction to the academic side of the business, but it’s in my home country of Nigeria that I got to witness what it means to run a company first-hand.
Growing up, I got to watch my mum as the boss. She ran several businesses at one time. Being raised by such a strong, career-minded woman inspired my love of doing things for myself.
It meant that, from a very young age, I knew I was going to run my own company one day.
But what I needed was the skills. I learned a lot from watching my mum, but I wanted to take things further, to gain the essential knowledge I would need to become part of and grow her empire.
That’s what the study of business management is giving me. It’s also why I applied to the University of Sunderland in London.
It has a really great reputation for business management courses, so I knew it was the right choice to help me prepare for my future.
Of course, you don’t really know what it will be like until you get here, but I was so happy with my decision.
The course was exactly what I needed to get prepared for my career in business. I graduated feeling so ready to take on my future.
But university for me was about more than just academic study. It’s so important to go through the personal and professional development side of things too.
There’s loads of support from the Careers and Employability people, which I found invaluable as a sounding board for my plans.
They helped me think in more specific terms about what I want to do. That’s how I came to the conclusion that a future in either project management or marketing might be right for me.
They’re both areas of business that I find particularly interesting, and I could even go on to do further study in them.
For anyone thinking about coming to the University of Sunderland in London, I would just say do it. I promise you won’t regret your decision."
