Nadine Ben Messaoud, originally from Tunisia in northern Africa, is studying for her MSc in Public Health at the University of Sunderland in London. She left her career to join the University and pursue her passion for helping people.
The University of Sunderland in London was the perfect choice for me. It has a great reputation and the Masters had everything I was looking for.
“Before coming to the University I was an Anesthesia Technician in the cardiovascular department of a private clinic in Tunisia. My job was to give patients anaesthesia before heart surgery.
By the time I decided to apply for the MSc in Public Health, I was ready for a change. I loved the science of my role and the fact that I was helping people. But I needed more variety and better career prospects. I wanted to find a job where I could help a large number of people and also focused on prevention of disease and illness. The University of Sunderland in London was the perfect choice for me. It has a great reputation and the Masters had everything I was looking for.
I’ve been able to study things like how to improve the conditions and behaviours of people affected by poor health, the practice of public health policy and research into educating future leaders. It feels like I’m getting the knowledge that I need to inform health care practices and policies on local, regional and global levels. I’m particularly interested in healthcare education among young people, which is something I’ve had the chance to research and learn more about on the course. I'd like to take my studies further with a PhD in Public Health. Most of all, I’d like to bring what I’ve been learning back to my home country of Tunisia, to help improve our public health sector and make the country a better place.
While I’ve been at the University, I’ve had the chance to get really involved. I’ve been the Vice-President of the Health and Wellbeing Society, which fits perfectly with my passion for Public Health. I’ve been involved in workshops for things like World Mental Health Day, smoking awareness, and diet and nutrition. We’re always holding talks and discussions, so I’ve been busy but it’s great being able to provide something for my fellow students on a topic I’m so interested in. Another memory that will stay with me is the Student Mobility Project. A load of students from London went up north to visit the University of Sunderland in July 2019. It was amazing getting to see a different part of this community."
