BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Integrated)
Marilena is a student with a huge amount of passion. She tells us why she decided to put her aside to go after her goal of entering the global hospitality sector.

“I’ve worked in the tourism industry for nearly ten years, and I have a degree in it from my home country of Greece.
So why study for my BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management (Integrated)?
The answer is simple: it’s always been a dream of mine to live and study in the UK and now, with the University of Sunderland in London, I finally get to do that!
I have some pretty big goals when it comes to my future career. Up until now, I’ve focused on working in Greece, which has been amazing.
But I want to take on the world! I plan to go into global tourism and work in management.
The course is helping me do that. I’m learning lots about marketing and managerial techniques in general.
But specifically, we study how to scale everything up to a global industry that just has so much potential.
I knew an English university would be the place for me to get that kind of education because the global reputation of UK degrees is so good.
But I wasn’t totally sure where I was going to study until a friend told me about the University of Sunderland in London.
I also applied to two other universities, just in case, but I knew it had to be this campus – the course fits my needs so well.
I’ve been particularly happy with my choice because of how incredible and passionate the lecturers are.
Benjamin Agyemang, for example, has all these innovative ways of sharing his really impressive knowledge with us like using online learning platforms such as Kahoot! to learn through play.
Of course, university can be challenging, but you get so much support here you’ll always have the chance to do your best.
For example, I’m currently expecting a child and my doctor recommended I avoid public transportation during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Obviously, that could have been stressful, but I felt so supported by my lecturers and the Health and Wellbeing team that it’s all been great so far.
It’s given me this confidence to know, even when I have my baby, I’ll still be able to study. That’s one of the many things the University has given me.”
