With this course, you'll learn academic English language skills, teaching you to take notes, speak in seminars, make presentations and read and write assignments and reports. By the end of the programme, you'll be at the level needed for your University course.

Overview

This course is for people with an International English Testing System (IELTS) score of 5.0 or equivalent. If your level is lower, take a look at the Pre-Intermediate course. Or if it's higher, see the Upper-Intermediate instead.

You'll work on your academic skills, including listening, note-taking, reading and summarising, as well as writing essays and reports, doing research and presenting.

By the end of this ten-week course, your English will be at the University of Sunderland equivalent level of an IELTS 6.0 score - the requirement for most of our courses. Download a full list of EAP entry requirements.

Course structure

In this online course, you'll be taught through our Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas, helping you practice your English weekly with our teachers and your classmates in the chatrooms.

Plus, you'll work outside the classroom, using out extracurricular material and getting feedback on what you write. When you pass, you'll get a Foundation Certificate of Achievement in English for Academic Purposes and have the English skills to study your chosen course.

Over the three modules in this course, you'll learn academic skills like listening, note-taking, reading, summarising, writing essays and reports, doing research and making presentations in English.

You'll have 250 hours of contact time over ten weeks, and will come away with a level of English that's the University's equivalent of a 6.0 IELTS score.
