Zainab - Sparta Global

In October 2024, students at the University of Sunderland in London had the opportunity to hear from Alastair Marshall, Talent Team Lead at Sparta Global. He gave important insights on how to get started in technology without a specialised degree, current industry trends, and graduate positions in technology consulting. Here are some key points I found useful, including advice on how to impress an employer and what to consider if you want to start a career in tech consulting.

6 Tips to get into Technology Consulting

Develop Transferable Skills

One of the most important takeaways from Alastair's presentation was that a graduate's abilities and flexibility are just as important as their degree. Although qualifications are valued, Sparta Global believes that skills such as communication, problem-solving and teamwork are crucial for success in consulting. Graduates from tech and non-tech degrees can thrive in the tech industry thanks to this strategy.

Build Your Technical Skills Online

In the rapidly evolving tech industry, employers need applicants who are dedicated to ongoing professional development. Alastair recommended using online resources like Udemy to learn about data analysis, coding, or project management. Showing initiative in learning can be a big plus in applications and if consistent keeps consultants competitive in the market by assisting them in maintaining the abilities required to adjust to new technologies and trends.

As UoSiL students, you can learn new skills and develop your knowledge with Canvas Catalog’s free online courses. From Microsoft Office to mastering HTML, every course comes with a certificate of completion that you can add to your CV.

Make the Most of LinkedIn and Network with Industry Professionals

Building relationships with professionals in the field can open doors and provide insight. Reaching out on LinkedIn or attending industry events is a great way to start. An active LinkedIn profile showcasing skills, certifications, and endorsements can help candidates stand out. Joining relevant groups and sharing insights can boost professional visibility.

Prepare for Competency-Based Interviews

Alastair emphasised the value of the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to answer interview and application questions effectively. Candidates should spend time reflecting upon their experiences and then practice linking them to the demands of tech consulting.

Apply to Graduate Programs Like Sparta Global’s HTD (Hire, Train, Deploy)

There are companies out there that are ready to support students as they transition from studies into the jobs market. Sparta Global’s HTD (Hire, Train, Deploy) program is designed to give graduates the training and experience they need to succeed in tech consulting, making it a great option for those just starting out.

Use Career Services

The truth is that most successful people in life have gotten to where they are with the help of people around them. UoSiL’s Careers Service can offer support with CV building, job applications, interview practice, and networking. This service is free and available up to 3 years after graduation!

Conclusion

To conclude, attending an employer insight session was an incredibly positive experience as I near the end of my university journey. It reduced my anxiety about the future and motivated me to sign up for several employer networking events. I was particularly inspired to learn that employers value not just our degrees, but also our skills and potential. This realisation has broadened my perspective, encouraging me to explore opportunities in various sectors, beyond those directly related to my degree. For anyone in a similar position, I highly recommend getting involved in such sessions!
