In a proud first, a research article written by a our student has been published in an academic journal.
The article, researched and written by MSc Public Health graduate, Catharina Candussi, during her time studying at the University, explores the physical and mental health implications of problematic smartphone usage among students, and was first published in August 2023, in the Journal of Affective Disorders Reports.
Reflecting on her achievement, Catharina explained how her studying experience at the University and the support she received from academic staff gave her the confidence and encouragement for academic and professional success.
“Having my research work published is a career milestone, and with the encouragement from Madhi Sivasubramanian and Russell Kabir, the possibility of publication became a reality. The research, writing, and reviewing process was challenging, but Madhi and Russell were there for me throughout with guidance and support – I felt really valued.”
Catharina outlined how there are so many people at the University on hand to assist students and highly recommends seeking advice from academic supervisors and tutors - “Collaboration is key to success”.
“The University of Sunderland in London offers a more personal experience when compared to larger universities. The stronger connections allow staff to actively support and encourage students to achieve their goals.”
Her time at the University inspired Catharina to continue her studies and explore an academic career in public health, and she is currently studying for a PhD at the University of Vienna.
“Catharina’s dedication and perseverance throughout the research process were exceptional and it gives me immense pleasure to see her hard work rewarded with publication in a prestigious journal.
At the University of Sunderland in London, we are committed to providing a supportive and encouraging environment for our students. We are incredibly proud of Catharina and look forward to seeing what she will achieve in the future as she continues her academic career in public health.” - Madhi Sivasubramanian, Senior Lecturer and Programme Manager in Nursing and Public Health Programmes.
