Yordany Canon

BA (Hons) Business and Management

Yordany is a student at the University of Sunderland in London studying BA (Hons) Business and Management. He tells us about his journey from Spain to going after his dreams.

I’m pushing myself and working towards a better life.

“This year has been challenging for students all over the world. Obviously, with the University being closed for a few months, I got to know the process of studying online.

It worked for me, but I’m really glad I’ve been able to come onto campus in recent weeks, just to be around people and have an excuse to see the building again!

The other thing is I’ve just been furloughed from my job in a coffee shop. I’m not quite sure what that means yet, but I’ll just have to see.

I’m originally from the Canary Islands in Spain where I was studying technology and computer science – so quite different from what I’m doing now.

But then the financial crisis in 2008 hit the industry really hard so I decided to come to the UK to study and learn English.

I’ve been working since I got to London, but I wanted to do something more. That’s why I chose to look at business degrees.

I started off with a Higher National Diploma in Business Administration then on to this course.

To be honest, I don’t know what I’m going to do when I graduate but I like that you have so many options with a business degree.

What I’m learning fits into lots of kinds of work.

Over the course of the pandemic, I’ve been investing in cryptocurrencies - sort of like virtual money.

I’m really enjoying that, so maybe it’s an area I could look into after I finish at the University.

I see my studies as a personal academic challenge. My family travelled from Colombia to Spain to increase their life opportunities.

That’s what I’m doing in the UK and with my degree – I’m pushing myself and working towards a better life."
