Ajoke Odumesi

Master of Business Administration MBA

Ajoke Odumesi wanted to find out what was missing from her business when she applied to study for her degree at the University of Sunderland in London. She tells us about the value of combining experience with theory.

That first impression was fantastic, it’s what motivated me to apply.

“I left education a long time ago. It’s a big deal, deciding to go to university after so many years out of the classroom. But I wanted to learn. I used to have my own business, a small cafe. Unfortunately, the business closed. Although that was disappointing, it left me with a need to know why.

That’s why I chose to study business management. When you start a business, you think you know how it will all work. But you soon realise that you need more than practical experience. Knowing the theory behind managing a business is so important as well. I’ve learned so much from this degree that I wish I’d known when I was running my business.

At first, I didn’t know how well I would do. I took an HND in Business Management, and to my surprise, I found that I passed all 16 of my modules with merits. It gave me the confidence to apply for my BA in Business Management, and then my MBA at the University of Sunderland in London.

I still remember coming into the University for my interview. I met some of the Admissions Team. They were marvellous. They explained everything about the modules, making sure I wanted to study for the right reasons. That first impression was fantastic, it’s what convinced me to apply.

Doing a masters is a lot of work, but it’s rewarding. You’ve got to love what you’re doing and have the passion to commit the time to your studies. It’s also really encouraging to write essays and get good marks back. It really made me feel like I could achieve my goals. I’m confident I now have the knowledge that will help me when I get back into the business world.

Anyone can get their degree as long as they’re committed. It’s worth it because a degree can give you so many options for your future and help you move on in life.”
