Wubalem Beyene

BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care (Top-Up)

Wubalem Beyene is a BSc (Hons) Health and Social Care (Top-Up) student, studying here with us at the University of Sunderland in London. In this case study, she tells us how applying for her degree was not just about achieving success for herself, but for her children as well.

I believe education is power. I’m so glad I made the decision to come study here at the University of Sunderland in London, not just for myself but for my children too.

“Throughout my studies, my biggest driving force is my kids. I want to be a good role model for them, to show that you can achieve your goals if you work hard enough.

That’s the reason I chose to study at the University of Sunderland in London. I want to have a career that helps people and can change lives.

But the most important thing for me is for my children to see me taking my dream and turning it into a reality. I want to inspire them to go on to bigger and better things.

I’ve been in this industry for a while now. Before applying to the University, I was working as a healthcare assistant.

It’s a rewarding world to be a part of, getting to care for people, seeing to their needs and feeling like you’ve really achieved something at the end of the day.

But I’m a firm believer in the idea you need to always be moving forward with your career.

For me to do that, I needed to start studying.

The BSc is an opportunity to learn more about my industry and upskill myself to get ready for job promotions in the future.

But it wasn’t just the idea of doing a degree that was important to me. I knew I needed to find a university which fitted around my life.

I found out about the University of Sunderland in London from some friends who studied here.

When I checked out the course, I really liked the look of it. All the topics covered are catered toward the end goal of my career.

I found the idea really reassuring, that I’ll be working with such a specific aim in mind throughout the degree.

In particular, I love how the course is laid out in such a way that shows our lecturers are as dedicated to improving people’s lives as I am.

It just goes to show we’re learning from people who have really experienced this industry first-hand, are motivated by the same things as us and are sharing their expertise to help us progress.

I believe education is power. I’m so glad I made the decision to come study here at the University of Sunderland in London, not just for myself but for my children too.

It’s my chance to show them that education can help you achieve your goals and be successful in life.”
