Case Study

Alex Yakoleva

BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship (Top-Up)

Alexandra Yakoleva gave up her job in a hotel to focus on her two-year-old son. Now she’s returning to study at the University of Sunderland in London to get her Business Management degree.

My biggest struggle is time management. I have to wait until my son is asleep to get my studying done.

“I came from Russia to the UK to study for my first degree and improve my English. At the time, I wanted to work in the tourism industry, so I did an HND in tourism and hospitality management. I went from my studies straight into work, first at a travel agency, then in a hotel. But I decided to give that up when my son was born. I wanted to focus full time on raising him.

When my son turned two years old, I decided that I needed to finish what I started. I wanted to get a full degree and my friend recommended the University of Sunderland in London. The biggest factor for me was it’s manageable lecture schedule. It’s a relatively easy commute, so I can come in for lectures once or twice a week. That means I have more time to spend with my son and husband. I do have to wait until he’s asleep to write my essays though!

I chose the BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up) because I wanted to move beyond tourism. I’ve decided I want to work in Human Resources, so I am very much looking forward to the modules on HR and managing projects.”
