Maria Ghigea

BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance

When the global pandemic struck her sector, Maria Ghigea (BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance) was forced to rethink her career. She tells us how she got the training and expertise needed to achieve her goals.

If you dream big and want an exceptional career, this is the place for you.

“I’ve always been passionate about numbers and working in the finance industry.

Before the pandemic, I’d managed to pursue that interest through my career as an account assistant for a luxury fitness club.

I’d been doing the job for over four years when COVID-19 changed everything about the way we work.

During my time in the accounts department, I’d had the opportunity to learn a lot about my sector.

But the pandemic caused a tough financial situation and the company was forced to make redundancies.

Sadly this included me, but it was the reason I was given that really got me thinking.

I didn’t have any formal financial qualifications which, they reasoned, would be necessary to go further in my role.

It was a real blow especially because I was trying to work at the same time as raising my two young children.

But it was also, in a way, quite motivational. I knew I loved what I did, I just needed a way of taking my knowledge to the next step.

That’s when I started thinking about the University of Sunderland in London.

My job used to be in Canary Wharf, so I’m familiar with the area. In fact, my route to work took me past the campus every morning.

Walking by it each day, I couldn’t help but think about what it would be like to study there.

So, when the redundancy hit, I decided to do some research and, I have to say, I was really impressed with what I saw.

The University has a great global reputation and the essential business skills and experience you get on the BA (Hon) Accounting and Finance course is brilliant.

It would even help me balance my life as a mother thanks to the two lecture days a week.

My course is perfect for me. It offers an in-depth understanding of how accounting and financial businesses operate.

Plus, you learn so many transferable skills that I can see myself using in pretty much any industry.

So far, my favourite module has been business law. I’ve learned a lot about problem-solving and analytical skills, and the rights of businesses, consumers and other legal issues.

It’s so interesting!

I’ve grown so much since leaving my old job. Obviously, it wasn’t an ideal situation but it’s given me the opportunity to study here.

Now, my dream career has changed a little bit. I want to be an accredited chartered accountant with high earning potential the possibility of starting my own business.

With the skills I’m learning at the University of Sunderland in London I’m well on the way to achieving my goal.

If you dream big and want an exceptional career, this is the place for you.”
