Yarina Figuereo

BA (Hons) Business Management and Entrepreneurship (Top-Up)

Yarina Figuereo is a student on the BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up) course at the University of Sunderland in London. She tells us about how her children motivate her studies and why she loves being a Student Ambassador.

When I got accepted by the University, I told myself I would take on all the opportunities I was offered. I wanted to better myself in every way possible.

“I love studying. I’m naturally always trying to learn new things. It’s one of the things that motivates me. The other is my children. I want to show them that education is important, to give them the same love for learning that I have. That’s one of the reasons I chose to study at the University. The timetable means that I have time to study while also getting to be with my family. That’s the most important thing. Studying, to me, represents the opportunity for a better job and the feeling of achievement you get from academic success.

I chose the BA (Hons) Business Management (Top-Up) because it opens up so many opportunities for me. I’m not sure what I want to do when I graduate, but thanks to the degree, I have a foundation in Human Resources, Finance and Project Management. I think that means I’ll be prepared if I want to start my own company, which is a real possibility now.

My experience at the University of Sunderland in London has been a blessing. I’ve had so many opportunities, like running the Computer Science and IT Society and working as a Student Ambassador. I was also chosen by my classmates as a course representative. That meant going to meetings with staff and making sure we, as students, have a voice in the decisions that the University makes.

When I got accepted by the University, I told myself I would take on all the opportunities I was offered. I wanted to better myself in every way possible. That’s why I chose to be a Student Ambassador. I didn’t even realise it was a paid role at first! When I found out, I was so excited. I thought, ‘Wow, I get to do something that I really enjoy and I get paid as well!’ I have quite a lot of duties as a Student Ambassador. For example, I help new applicants with their enrolment. It feels really good to see them becoming a part of our student community and finding their way around the tools they’re going to need for their studies. It’s a really great University to study at.

I would honestly encourage everyone who wants to study here to just take part and enjoy all the opportunities on offer.”
