Sudiappu Perera

MSc Tourism and Hospitality

Sudiappu Perera joined the University of Sunderland in London to study for his MSc in Tourism and Hospitality. He talks to us about how what he’s learning in his degree is helping him get ready to take his career to the next level.

That’s what convinced me to choose to study at the campus. I wanted to learn from experts who are as excited about the tourism industry as I am.

“In my home country of Sri Lanka, I was the course director for the Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management, based in the commercial capital, Colombo.

I loved my job, getting to talk to people about the industry that I love so much.

But I wanted to give more to the profession and the students I interact with.

That’s why I chose to study for my postgraduate degree. I want to be able to go back to Sri Lanka with the knowledge that will help me research the challenges to developing sustainable eco-tourism in my country.

The University of Sunderland in London’s tourism department has a great reputation thanks to the friendly and helpful academic staff here.

That’s what convinced me to choose to study at the campus. I wanted to learn from experts who are as excited about the tourism industry as I am.

You get a lot out of studying here, especially if you’re interested in combining theory with practical skills like I was.

So, naturally, I enjoyed the research methodology module because it taught me how to use tools that I’d not come across in my career before.

It was a really good example of learning something that I will be able to put into practice in the future.

I’m not confident enough to carry out my own research on the tourism industry, which has led to a new idea.

I’m hoping soon to write a textbook on green tourism. That way I can contribute to the teaching of the subject and continue working in the sector I love so much.

If you’re thinking about applying to study here, I would not hesitate for one moment.”
