Zineb Bernoussi

BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management

Zineb Bernoussi is a BSc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management student here at the University of Sunderland in London. She tells us about her dream of owning a hotel and what it’s been like studying in the UK under lockdown.

The University has a great reputation for tourism, something I’d heard about before I applied. I just knew it was the right place for me.

“Some people grow up wanting to be doctors or police officers. But since I was a little kid, all I’ve wanted to do was work in tourism.

It comes from this love I have of meeting people and experiencing new cultures.

For me, the best way of having a life that includes those things is to work in this industry.

That’s why I chose to apply for the course, but it’s also the reason I decided to study at the University of Sunderland in London.

It has a great reputation for tourism, something I’d heard about before I applied.

I just knew it was the right place for me.

I’ve already started making plans for what I want to do when I graduate. Right now, the idea is to work in a hotel, hopefully becoming a manager in the near future.

In the long-term though, I want to own a hotel myself.

The idea of having the kind of freedom that would bring while also getting to do something which has always interested me is exciting.

I can’t talk about my university experience so far without mentioning COVID-19.

Sadly, I’ve not been able to come on campus a lot since the lockdowns kept us all in our homes.

Thankfully, that’s starting to change now. It has been challenging, but I feel like it’s made me more resilient and ready to face what might come next.

This was my first time studying in the UK, so the system was all so new to me. Not knowing anybody or getting to meet people face-to-face was a little difficult.

But the lecturers have all been very helpful.

Any time I’ve needed them, whether that’s for help understanding something we spoke about in a lecture or just someone to talk with, they’ve been there for me.

I was really glad when in-person classes started up again, but now I’m thinking beyond that, to the kind of future I’ll have after I graduate.”
