Case Study

Luis Pereira

BA (Hons) Business Management and MBA (Top Up)

For Luis Pereira, studying for his MBA was a life goal he was not sure was achievable. But he found that location and good relationships with his lecturers meant he could balance his family life and studies.

The University has inspired me to think beyond the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve.

"It was a really tough decision to come to university. When I was completing my Higher National Diploma at college I found out my girlfriend was pregnant with twins. I had to decide whether I would be able to provide for my family financially and be able to give enough time to my studies.

It’s gratifying to look back at what I’ve achieved. I never thought I’d be able to support my girlfriend and our twin boys while achieving my MBA. I chose the University of Sunderland in London mainly due to their ranking and reputation, but the location also appealed to me.

It’s close to my house, so I can spend less time travelling. Plus it’s in the heart of Canary Wharf. What could be better for someone studying an MBA? It’s really inspiring. I don’t think that having children is an excuse not to pursue your education. My twins have always been the best motivation for my studies.

As I’m originally from Bolivia, initially I was concerned about the course because I thought I wouldn't be on the same level as other students. The lecturers instilled confidence in me and helped me realise that I was capable. In turn, I became more confident in my own abilities.

The biggest compliment I can pay the staff is that a couple have become close friends. They know their stuff but, crucially, they’re approachable too. The University has inspired me to think beyond the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve."
